The Biden administration is taking time to review any national security challenges posed by video-sharing app TikTok, telecom provider Huawei, and other Chinese-owned technology companies, before announcing a strategy for addressing them. President Biden is “firmly committed to making sure that Chinese companies cannot misappropriate and misuse American data,” according to White House press secretary Jen Psaki. However, Psaki declined to share any specifics of the President’s deliberations, citing an “ongoing review” by the new administration of the issues. The outgoing administration issued an executive order – under review by the courts – banning U.S. companies from providing services to TikTok, and treated Huawei as a direct national security threat with sanctions, including preventing it from using U.S. software.
