Members of Congress have criticized Colonial Pipeline over its reluctance to provide information about any ransom it paid to the hackers who pushed them to shut down its operations. Bloomberg News reported that Colonial paid nearly $5 million to recover their systems. Representatives Bennie Thompson (D-MS) and Carolyn Maloney (D-NY) – chairs of the House Homeland Security and Oversight & Reform Committees – said the company’s refusal to share information hindered their ability to craft legislation to address the ransomware problem. At issue is the conflict between Colonial’s interest in quick recovery from the incident versus providing an incentive to future hackers by meeting their ransom demands.
