By a decisive 69-30 vote, the Senate has passed the Biden administration’s $1 trillion infrastructure bill, which – alongside its roads-bridges-and-broadband expenditures – includes significant new cybersecurity funding. The bill appropriates $550 million to update and modernize the electrical grid, and $1 billion to fund DHS cybersecurity grants to state and local agencies. It also creates and bankrolls the Cyber Response and Recovery Fund to help the private sector and local governments deal with major cyber attacks. The legislation authorizes $157 million for cybersecurity research at the DHS Science and Technology Directorate, and $21 million to set up the National Cyber Director office. It also mandates stricter tax reporting requirements on cryptocurrency trading.
