Why is the media and the new Trump Administration giving so much attention to the largest island in the world, home to only 60,000 people? The Biden Administration recognized early-on Greenland’s growing strategic importance given its location and natural resources, including rare earth elements.

In response, Biden’s National Security Council mobilized USAID, resulting in the $2.5 million US-Greenland Enterprise Driven Growth Initiative (EDGI), a three-year program implemented under USAID’s Digital Economy and Market Development Activity by Resonance Global. The activity focuses on business development, trade facilitation and workforce development.

Samantha Power also met with the Prime Minister of Greenland and a USAID office in Nuuk has been established. Expect more activity under the new Trump Administration. With only 60,000 people, don’t expect a wave of Peace Corps Volunteers or massive development funding initiatives.
