Biden Administration Prioritizes Transnational Anti-Corruption Efforts

In a national security Memorandum issued by President Biden on June 3, 2021, the administration has made clear that it considers anti-corruption efforts, including increased enforcement on both the “supply” and “demand” side of corruption, to be a top policy and law enforcement priority. This initiative has significant implications for companies doing business in the international markets, where corruption risk remains endemic in many quarters.

The Memorandum on Establishing the Fight Against Corruption as a Core United States National Security Interest identifies corruption as a major threat to democracy, economic equity, and global development and directs a broad review to develop a government-wide strategy to significantly bolster national and international efforts to promote good governance and combat corruption.
