Department of Justice – A Fresco, California sleep clinic billed Medicare for thousands of sleep studies it never performed.
From October 2019 through September 2021, Travis Gober—former owner of the VIP Sleep Center—claimed to perform sleep studies to identify sleeping disorders for patients who were referred to the clinic, by physicians that Gober had previously worked with. He billed Medicare more than $1 million for reimbursement based on these claims, despite the fact that the studies were never performed. In addition to the FCA violations, the claims also involved aggravated identity theft. Gober explains that he perpetrated this fraud to pay off clinic debts incurred without his knowledge by his brother.
