The FCC has unanimously adopted an order that would reimburse small telecom companies removing Huawei and ZTE gear from their supply chains, if Congress appropriates funds for it. Commissioners invoked the Chinese Communist Party as a threat justifying the order. “America has turned the page on the weak and timid approach to Communist China of the past,” said Republican commissioner Brendan Carr. “Any backsliding or softening of our approach would be a monumental mistake.” Democratic commissioner Jessica Rosenworcel also warned that the Chinese government is still actively consolidating its global 5G authority.
