Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) has been accused of violating the Privacy Act and cybersecurity laws by attempting to gain access to the Treasury Department’s central payments database. DOGE employees have accessed USAID’s IT systems and secure spaces leading to concerns that they had unauthorized access to Personally Identifiable Information (PII) as well as sensitive and classified files.

Legal experts and federal employee unions have filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration, claiming that sharing payment information with DOGE breaches the Privacy Act of 1974. DOGE’s access to sensitive data has raised concerns about national security and the potential for a massive data breach. The Treasury Department has stated that DOGE will have “read-only” access to the federal payment systems, and a review of the system is underway.
