On January 21, 2025, President Trump signed Executive Order 14173 titled “Ending Illegal Discrimination and Restoring Merit-Based Opportunity”. The Order amounted to an initial step by the Trump administration to end diversity, equity, and inclusion (“DEI”) as well as diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility (“DEIA”) in federal contracting. On February 3, 2025, the National Association of Diversity Officers in Higher Education filed a lawsuit in the United States District Court of Maryland challenging the legality of the Order. The judge has issued a preliminary injunction halting the orders. We will keep an eye on this case, as it could could have significant impacts on contractors and grantees.
