An estimated $47 billion in funding is needed to reach an anticipated 305 million displaced people in 72 countries in response to growing conflict and natural disasters. These numbers were reported by the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UN OCHA) in a recent announcement. OCHA states that difficult decisions must be made in prioritizing a targeted 190 million individuals that they can realistically reach in 2025, if $47 billion is contributed by bilateral donors. They note that only 43% of 2024’s promised $50 billion has been made available as of November.

The announcement acknowledges that funding for humanitarian efforts has plateaued and declined in recent years. They anticipated that the primary donor countries, such as the U.S., UK and Germany, will closely examine their humanitarian assistance funding.
