On July 25, 2019, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo signed into law the Stop Hacks and Improve Electronic Data Security Act (the SHIELD Act or the Act), which expands and updates New York’s data security breach notification law. In general, the amendments will take effect on October 23, 2019; however, the data security safeguards requirements of the Act will become effective on March 23, 2020.
